Answer to your first question is no it is not hard for anyone to see what somebody is doing on an unsecured connection. There are programs out there for free that allow beginner users to do this. You can see key logs, screen shots and passwords easily!

The fastest and cheapest internet to get at this time is DSL. Try shopping around with different providers to try to get the cheapest deal.
