You really have no idea what you're talking about. Wifi is wifi, it's all the same. The only thing you have to worry about is password protected wifi. There is a thing called mifi which is a portable wifi device. But you'll need a contract with a carrier that supports mifi. Right now I think verizon wireless is the only company that supports mifi.- S- [, {/ \& N3 a+ H

Your thinking is a bit backwards:  The iPod touch is portable, routers are not.  Routers are devices that plug into the device that brings the Internet into your home (or hotel, business, restaurant, whatever) that turns it into wireless.

Incidentally, there are a lot of apps available for the iPod touch that do not require network access in order to play.  In fact, none of the games I play needs network access, and only a few of the apps do.

If you're on a road trip and you want WiFi (as in wireless internet access) for downloading apps, web browsing etc you're going to need to look at a 3G to WiFi access point.

Where normal WiFi routers need a physical internet connection through a cable, 3G to WiFi router's/access points need a connection to a 3G network just like a mobile phone. Data charges can be high so if you're looking to do a lot of downloading (more than just a few webpages) then you're probably going to have to look at a contract for a service like Verizon's MiFi. This will allow you to create your own personal WiFi point where ever you can get a signal.
